Enclosure

COP X.

20057

Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce.

Hongkong 5th August, 1897.

Sir,

6

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of your letter (No.1206) of the 29th ultimo forwarding copy of

a letter addressed by Messrs. Marsland, Son & Co. of Manchester

to the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies,

complaining of an infringement of one of their Trade Marks by

Belgian Manufacturers, and in which you request the views of the

Chamber on the subject.

In reply, I am instructed to point out:-

(1).

That the complaint of Messrs. Marsland, Son

& Co. is extremely vague, no documentary evidence being given, of

the infringement of trade mark alleged, and even the nature of the

article which bears the Trade Mark in question is not mentioned.

(2).

With regard to the suggestion contained in

the last paragraph of Messrs. Marsland, Son & Co.'s letter, they

would seem to be ignorant of the fact that there is a registration

of Trade Marks in this Colony which is intended to afford protection against piracy to the rightful owners of Trade Marks.

(Sd.)

I have etc.

R. Chatterton Wilcox,

Secretary.

Boo. J.B.Stewart Lockhart,

Colonial Secretary.
